“Rīgas satiksme” encourages parents to help their children prepare for the journey to school
The start of the new school year will also mean the first independent public transport journeys for many children. This is an important step for a child and, of course, can also be a slightly worrying moment for parents. That is why “Rīgas satiksme” encourages families to prepare together for the daily journey to school before the school year begins.
It is recommended that parents walk or take the planned route together with their child, show them where to get on and off, and explain which mode of transport they should use. It is also important to discuss what to do if the child misses their stop, boards the wrong vehicle, or needs assistance. A familiar route that has been practised in advance will help the child feel much safer and more confident.
Before the start of the school year, parents should make sure that their child has a valid Student Card. If a student is starting Grade 1, 5 or 10 this year, has changed schools, or has changed their personal details, a new Student Card must be issued. Children should also be reminded that every journey must be registered, even if they are entitled to a 100% fare concession.
It is also worth discussing a few simple but very important safety rules. When waiting for public transport, passengers should stay at least one large step away from the edge of the road. At stops where passengers need to board the vehicle directly from the roadway, they should only step onto the road once the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
During the journey, passengers should hold on to a handrail and avoid standing in front of the doors, so that other passengers can get on and off freely.
